Marge Calhoun
An experienced performer, Marge worked in various bands and acoustic
groups before leading her own group. Having performed in Presidential
Inauguralfestivities, she's appeared on national television as well as numerous radio
programs along the Mid-Atlantic seaboard.
Evolving as a performing songwriter in her own right with kudos from both
press and peers, she's garnered accolades from the Washington Area Music
Association and the Songwriter's Association of Washington. She's collaborated
with songwriters such as Fred Koller, Marcus Hummon, and Tom Paxton. As a
result, her songs brought her to such venues as the Bottom Line in NYC, the
Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, and the Barns at Wolftrap. She has appeared with
artists as varied as 10,000 Maniacs, Buck Owens, Richie Havens, and James Taylor.
"Calhoun is intent on developing her own identity as a singer/songwriter come hit or high water." -The Washington Post
"Sometimes it seems that half the acts go with the flow while the other half go with what they know. With the release of 'Freedom in Captivity', Marge Calhoun
joins the better half." -The Washington Post
"Marge's unique artistic vision and commitment to songwriting enables her to seamlessly graft a succession of musical styles onto her country roots."-Billboard Magazine
Having drifted from the shores of twang to rhythm and groove, she
continues to deliver her poignant lyrics with the versatile tenor saxophone virtuoso,
Ron Holloway (from Rootboy Slim and Dizzy Gillespe band) and the inimitable Blues/rock drummer/percussionist, Gary Crockett. The sound they bring forth from their combined backgrounds was the inspiration for her latest release,
"Twisted Tales of Passion and Pain" produced by Gary Crockett and Jonathan Yudkin.
It's clear Calhoun has a way with words in any idiom. The collection of
songs on her new CD could be described as stories with perspectives journeying
beyond the ordinary. Each lyrical tale is woven into a magic carpet of rock based
tapestries. Colored in temperatures from cool to hot, her songs come to life with world
class instrumentation and melodies that travel from flamenco to screaming libido.
Whether headlining a concert, or playing for hometown fans, Marge Calhoun
is sure to win over an audience and deliver with emotion and impact.
